It isn't a real department at UCLA, but rather an interdepartment composed of faculty from dozens of different departments (math, biology, computer science, physics, etc.). Bioinformatics is an important interdisciplinary research area with tremendous opportunity in graduate training and industry employment. Undergraduates in any Major can obtain a Bioinformatics Minor by completing an additional 8 courses. Through a comprehensive inventory of courses, the minor in Bioinformatics provides a solid foundation in, and familiarity with, active research problems at the interface of computer science, biology, and mathematics. Have established a Pre-Major GPA of at least 2.7 by taking one Pre-Major course at UCLA for a letter grade *Transfer students must have been admitted to UCLA under the Division of Life Sciences All requests to declare the Pre-Major must be sent via email to casb@lifesci.ucla.edu . The Bioinformatics Concentration is designed for students interested in the computational discovery and management of biological data, primarily genomic, proteomic, or metabolomic data. For students following the Calculus & Statistics Series Option #2, C&S BIO M32 can fulfill this requirement. CaSB Major Sheet Please reference the CaSB Major Sheet for Major course requirements, Concentration information, and Department policies, including information on how to graduate with Honors.

The minor in Bioinformatics allows students to develop an integrated understanding of contemporary genomic-scale research. Visit the Bioinformatics’s faculty roster. Computational and Systems Biology CM187 – “Research Communication in Computational and System Biology”. The Bioinformatics minor introduces undergraduate students to the emerging interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics, an active area of research at UCLA combining elements of the computational sciences with the biological sciences. Bioinformatics Minor Course Requirements. Students following the Bioinformatics, Biomedical Systems, or Systems Biology concentrations must also complete Mathematics 32A, but this does not have to be completed prior to admission to the major. The UCLA Undergraduate Bioinformatics Minor is an academic program established in Fall 2012 at UCLA. (UCLA itself offers undergraduate bioinformatics study via its Computational and Systems Biology major or Bioinformatics minor). Computer Science 170A – “Mathematical Modeling and Methods for Computer Science”. (UCLA itself offers undergraduate bioinformatics study via its Computational and Systems Biology major or Bioinformatics minor).
