Bioinformatics is the glue that allows us to manipulate, utilize and learn from vast amounts of biological data. Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (BF76) Bioinformatics is the acquisition of biological knowledge through new computational tools for organizing, managing, and mining biological data. UC San Diego’s Center for Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (CCBB) is a collaborative center that provides investigators with bioinformatics expertise to analyze large molecular datasets. Undergraduate majors and degrees at UC San Diego – see the UCSD General Catalog for specializations available within majors. The UC San Diego Bioinformatics and Systems Biology community has led multiple efforts to address the challenges introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Bioinformatics techniques are essential to answer pressing questions about disease, and pharmaceuticals. An interdisciplinary undergraduate major leading to BS degrees with a major or specialization in bioinformatics was created in fall 2001. BINF MAJOR “FLOWCHART”: Please review the “flowchart” of required courses to determine your progress in completion of those courses for your Bioengineering: Bioinformatics (BINF) major. We place special emphasis in the areas of genomics, transcriptomics, systems biology and translational medicine. No new students will be admitted to these majors. Bioinformatics majors utilize computation to understand, interpret, and analyze the flow of information in biological systems. These four departments offer rigorous and interdisciplinary trainings for this new and evolving field. Bioinformatics tools and databases enable a range of scientific, technological, and biomedical applications that would otherwise be impossible to achieve. A list of faculty at UCSD Mathematics Department that specialize in the field of Bioinformatics A key to our success has been our ability to recruit dynamic, award-winning faculty at both the senior and junior levels, thus ensuring that our nationally ranked research and educational programs will continue to grow in excellence with an infusion of new ideas and new energy. This major is offered separately by four UCSD departments: Biology, Computer Science, Bioengineering, and Chemistry. However, students who are currently declared will still be able to continue on and earn their degree in these major codes. *The majors listed above (Bioinformatics-CH37, Chemical Eduation-CH33, Chemical Physics-CH32) have been officially discontinued by the Academic Senate. Your choice of major is not connected to your undergraduate college. 1. UC San Diego Department of Bioengineering 9500 Gilman Drive, MC 0412 La Jolla, CA 92093-0412
