The happiness did not last. After his death in 1906 at the age of 88, his wife who was short of money, sold many of her husband's souvenirs of his former wife to the Brontë Society, including the portrait by Branwell Brontë of the three sisters, that had been kept. There were to be no direct descendants of the Brontës of Haworth. Charlotte Brontë's sister, Anne Bronte, died on May 28, 1849 as he was 29 years old. Charlotte died on the morning of March 31, 1855, in the early stages of pregnancy, just three weeks before her thirty-ninth birthday.
The thing is, of course, we did invent that story – or at least large parts of it.
Charlotte begins teaching at the Haworth Sunday school after completing her studies. The chances of Cornish gentlewoman Maria Branwell even meeting the poor Irish curate Patrick Brontë in Regency England, let alone falling passionately in love, were remote. The sisters, their writing, places they loved and times they lived in.

When 'Wuthering Heights' was published in 1848 one reviewer wrote: 'the reader is shocked, disgusted, almost sickened by details of cruelty, inhumanity, and the most diabolical hate and vengeance, and anon come passages of powerful testimony to the supreme power of love—even over demons in the human form.' She was suffering from the early stages of consumption and it was felt that the change of air might help relieve the symptoms. We mentioned earlier that in his 1948 book Great Novelists and Their Novels, Maugham lists Emily Brontë‘s Wuthering Heights as one of the 10 greatest novels of all time. Charlotte, Emily and Anne were born in 1816, 1818 and 1820 respectively, three of an original family of six children; however, by 1825 they, alongside their brother Branwell, were the only ones who had survived— their mother and sisters having died.
