My husband built a chicken tractor like Joel Salatin’s last year. Joel Salatin has almost perfected the art of pastured poultry so his model is a good one to start with. I honestly can’t remember where we found the plan for our smaller chicken tractor, but they have served us well for many years.

The book describes how to build the chicken tractor in Chapter 10, The Pen, but in a paragraph form.
We first heard of the idea of chicken tractors from Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms a good 16 or 17 years ago. Although it’s not an exact copy of Joel’s, it was inspired by his and is built in a similar fashion. We wanted to share with you the rough plans that my husband drew up in Visio to go with Joel Salatin’s Pastured Poultry Profits. Today, I want to show you how to build a Joel Salatin style chicken tractor. In the following article I want to show you the steps I used to build my chicken tractor. He was using these ‘tractors’ to move his meat birds around a pasture to keep them on new grass every day. My husband used that paragraph to draw up these plans.
